Guinea-Bissau has frozen political relations with Cape Verde, accusing its neighbour of interfering in its internal affairs after Praia called for the release of opposition leader Domingos Simões Pereira.
Pereira has been held in pre-trial detention for a week, facing allegations of helping finance an attempted coup in October 2025, alongside separate financial crime charges and alleged involvement in a 2023 coup. He was among senior politicians detained following the November 2025 military takeover, which replaced President Umaro Sissoco Embalo days after presidential and legislative elections.
A spokesperson for Guinea-Bissau’s National Transitional Council said Cape Verde had no right to comment on the country’s political and judicial affairs. The council did not specify what freezing political relations would involve.
The dispute marks a further deterioration in relations between the two countries, whose ruling parties have longstanding historical ties dating back to their joint independence struggle.
