US President Donald Trump has directed the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to impose new tariffs on imports from 60 countries following investigations into their enforcement of bans on goods produced with forced labour.
The memorandum follows USTR findings that the economies’ policies burden or restrict US commerce. Tariffs of 10% or 12.5% will apply, with product exemptions and future tariff-rate quotas for selected textile and apparel imports.
Key developments:
- 10% tariffs apply to 17 economies, including the United Kingdom, Canada, India and Mexico.
- Most remaining economies will face 12.5% tariffs, while special arrangements apply to the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan.
- Textile tariff-rate quotas for Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia are expected once implementation is feasible.
The measures follow investigations launched in March 2026 and public consultations that included more than 1,600 written submissions.
