Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has condemned a Ukrainian strike on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, describing it as a violation of the United Nations Charter and saying the incident “cannot go unanswered”.
According to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the attack killed one sailor and injured several others. Ukraine said it targeted a Russian warship and vessels transporting Iranian-linked military cargo, while Tehran denied involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Iran summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran in protest, while Ebrahim Azizi, head of parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said “Any attack on Iran always comes with a cost, and that remains true today; the US and Israel are well aware of this.
“Ukraine, too, may soon come to understand that Iran does not let actions go unanswered,” Azizi added, calling the attack “miscalculated”.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov later offered condolences over the sailor’s death during talks with Araghchi, who also discussed diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East.
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently claimed Russia is preparing to deploy an additional 30,000 North Korean troops and more missile launchers, though Russia and North Korea have not publicly responded to the allegation.
