The United States has launched strikes against Iran after attacks on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), more than 80 targets were struck, including over 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) small boats, missile launch sites and command centres. Iran reported strikes in Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas and Sirik, while the IRGC said it later targeted US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.

Key developments:

  • CENTCOM said the operation aimed to deter attacks on international commercial shipping.
  • Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister described the US action as a breach of the US-Iran memorandum signed last month.
  • Qatar and Saudi Arabia accused Iran of targeting tankers linked to their countries, allegations Tehran rejected.
  • Maritime authorities reported multiple tanker incidents in and around the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting ongoing risks to regional shipping.
