US President Donald Trump said the United States would respond firmly to attacks on its forces, following questions about reported Iranian missile activity in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters after making an announcement about a $22.5 billion renovation of Washington Dulles International Airport on Wednesday (29 Jul), Trump said: ‘We’re going to hit them very hard,’ adding that ‘they’ve already apologised, but we’ve got to smack them a little bit.’
Asked about reports that Iran could receive Chinese-made weapons via Pakistan, Trump said he would be “quite disappointed” if true, noting Chinese President Xi Jinping had previously assured him China would not supply arms to Iran.
The comments come as Reuters reported that Iran is expected to receive up to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defence missile systems under a new defence agreement, although Beijing has denied involvement and Pakistan has rejected suggestions it would facilitate any transfer through its territory.
