US President Donald Trump cited the recent migrant surge into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David, after a reported 60,000 people crossed from Morocco into the Spanish territory within 24 hours. He argued that the incident demonstrated the consequences of what he described as weak immigration laws and border management.
Referring to the events in Spain, Trump said: “It looks like an invasion of a country by hundreds of thousands of people,” adding that “they don’t know what to do” and warning that “the same thing’s going to happen to us” without stricter US border policies.
The comments came as Spain and Morocco coordinated the return of thousands of migrants and reinforced border security following the mass crossing, which left 57 people dead on the Spanish side and prompted Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to describe the incident as “a violation of Spain’s sovereignty.”
