The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has suspended trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran after accusing Tehran of launching two ballistic missiles towards UAE territory.
The UAE Ministry of Defence said air-defence systems detected the missiles, with one falling into the sea outside territorial waters and another landing within UAE territory. Iran denied involvement, with Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rejecting the allegations.
The UAE said the suspension was linked to regional security concerns and efforts to protect the international financial system.
Key developments:
- UAE Foreign Ministry announced the halt of economic ties with Iran “until further notice”.
- Iran denied responsibility and said the claims affected regional trust-building efforts.
- The move follows renewed tensions in the Gulf after months of diplomatic engagement.
In the midst of the dispute US President Donald Trump has insisted that no talks with Iran are currently scheduled and claiming that the Strait of Hormuz is open.
Iranian officials have disputed Washington’s position, while Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, criticised members of the Trump administration, describing them as a “clown crew”.
