US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing the United States to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America”, describing the move as effective immediately while renewing criticism of Canada over trade, defence and manufacturing.

Speaking in the Oval Office on Thursday (27 Aug), Trump claimed Canada had been “ripping us off for a long time on trade.” He also reiterated plans for higher tariffs on Canadian-made vehicles, arguing production should take place in the United States.

The announcement comes as US-Canada relations remain under strain following the collapse of bilateral trade negotiations, the introduction of new tariffs and Canada’s plans for retaliatory measures, marking a significant deterioration in relations between the two neighbours.
