Yemen’s internationally recognised government has launched air strikes against Houthi positions as heavy ground fighting intensifies in the western provinces of Taiz and Hodeidah.

The clashes, among the deadliest since the 2022 truce, are centred on territory leading to the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait.

The strikes were carried out in support of government forces responding to a Houthi offensive towards the Red Sea coast, where both sides are contesting key supply routes and strategic high ground.

  • Government aircraft conducted at least 15 air strikes against Houthi positions, vehicles and gatherings.
  • Fighting has centred on Taiz, al-Makha and surrounding areas overlooking the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
  • Both government and Houthi forces have reinforced frontline positions as the fighting continues.

The latest escalation highlights the growing strategic importance of western Yemen as control of territory near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait becomes increasingly significant.

The waterway is a critical maritime corridor linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and carries a substantial share of global trade.

As wider tensions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia and regional security continue, prolonged fighting around the strait could have implications beyond Yemen, affecting commercial shipping, energy markets and international efforts to maintain freedom of navigation.
