The UK Ministry of Defence has announced additional defensive military support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following an increase in Houthi attacks across the region.

Under the measures approved by Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, RAF Typhoon fighter jets will conduct defensive counter-air missions to help protect Saudi cities and critical infrastructure.

Key developments include:

  • RAF Typhoon aircraft deployed in a defensive role to support Saudi airspace protection.
  • An RAF A400M aircraft provided to assist the movement of defence materiel within Saudi Arabia.
  • UK military advisers supporting Saudi staff offi
  • Existing UK air defence assistance extended to counter missile and drone threats.

The UK government said the support aimstrengthen regional security while protecting civilians and critical infrastructure amid continued instability in the Middle East.

The latest escalation highlights the wider geopolitical risks surrounding the Yemen conflict, with Houthi missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi airports, energy infrastructure and other strategic sites prompting renewed regional involvement.

Recent fighting has also intensified inside Yemen, including deadly Houthi strikes against government-aligned forces and continued pressure on civilian areas such as Taiz.

The Houthis say their attacks are aimed at pressuring Saudi Arabia over its role in Yemen’s conflict, including what they describe as military intervention and restrictions affecting Houthi-controlled areas.

Analysts, however, view the strikes as part of a broader regional power struggle involving Iran, Gulf security and competition over strategic infrastructure and trade routes. The escalation risks further destabilising the Middle East while complicating efforts towards a long-term political settlement in Yemen.
