South Korea and France have signed a series of agreements to expand cooperation in defence, the defence industry, technology and trade following talks between President Lee Jae Myung and President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Tuesday (8 Sep).
The summit, held during Lee’s state visit marking 140 years of diplomatic relations, included measures to strengthen military information sharing, pursue a mutual military logistics support agreement and deepen industrial collaboration.
Key developments:
- South Korea and France agreed to enhance military information protection and work towards a military logistics support agreement.
- The countries will expand cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, semiconductors and next-generation nuclear energy.
- Both leaders set a goal of increasing annual bilateral trade to US$20 billion by 2030.
- The two sides also reaffirmed cooperation on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and broader international security.
Both leaders said the agreements reflect a commitment to strengthening long-term strategic cooperation and promoting regional and international stability.
