China’s military base in Djibouti has undergone upgrades that could strengthen its communications, intelligence and surveillance capabilities, according to analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) using commercial satellite imagery.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Support Base in Djibouti, China’s only officially acknowledged overseas military base, has reportedly added new communications facilities since mid-2024, improving its ability to support operations beyond China’s borders.
