United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for reforms to global institutions and greater African representation during the Unstoppable Africa 2026 gathering.
Opening his remarks, Guterres said “Africa’s future must be shaped by Africans for Africans”, arguing that the international financial architecture should become more representative of developing countries and better reflect today’s global economy.
The UN chief renewed calls for stronger African participation in the United Nations Security Council, stating that the continent should have a permanent role in “dialogue and action for the whole globe”. He described Africa as having been “a double victim of colonialism”, including through its limited representation when many international institutions were established.
The address also highlighted Africa’s economic growth, expanding workforce, natural resources and innovation sectors. Guterres described the continent as “a rising world”, pointing to opportunities in renewable energy, technology, trade and entrepreneurship while noting challenges including geopolitical tensions, supply chain pressures and competition over critical minerals.
He called for investment that creates local value, greater support for youth and women entrepreneurs, increased climate finance, and stronger efforts to promote peace and stability. Guterres concluded that Africa’s growing global influence should benefit its people while contributing to wider international progress.
