UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for reforms to global institutions and stronger international cooperation during the 18th BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi, India on Sunday (13 Sep).
Guterres said the world is moving towards a more multipolar system, arguing that global institutions must adapt to current realities, including reforms to the UN Security Council and the Bretton Woods financial system.
Key areas highlighted by the UN chief included:
- Greater financial support for developing countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Increased participation of developing nations in international financial decision-making.
- Stronger cooperation on artificial intelligence governance and reducing the digital divide.
- Accelerated action on climate change, peace, and adherence to international law.
Guterres said countries must strengthen a multilateral system with the United Nations at its centre to address global challenges.
