US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has directed the creation of a pathway towards an Autonomous Warfare Command, a proposed functional combatant command intended to lead the US Joint Force in unmanned and autonomous warfare.
The initiative, known as Project Agincourt, will be led by the Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Unmanned Systems (DRPM-UxS), with a target date of 1 October 2027 for establishing the new command.
The command would receive dedicated personnel, funding, acquisition authorities and military career pathways, while testing and rapidly deploying autonomous systems in realistic operational environments.
Other initiatives announced at Marine Corps Base Quantico include:
- America’s Corps of Cadets — expanding military officer development programmes.
- FORTRESS America — strengthening military installation resilience and domestic supply chains.
- Next Great American Base — developing a new technologically advanced military installation.
- Office of Religious Affairs — elevating religious support within the Department.
- Project Meridian — examining future military technologies and warfare capabilities.
Taken together, the initiatives indicate a broader US military modernisation strategy, with greater emphasis on autonomous systems, technological adaptation, domestic resilience and future-force development.
The proposed command would place unmanned and autonomous capabilities more centrally within US military planning, reflecting the growing role of scalable, rapidly adaptable technologies in modern warfare.
