The African Union (AU) and regional organisations have renewed efforts to accelerate continental integration, economic development and the implementation of Agenda 2063 during the eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting (MYCM) held in El-Alamein, Egypt on Sunday (4 Oct).
Hosted by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt, the meeting brought together African leaders, the African Union Commission, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms (RMs) to strengthen cooperation and coordination.
Agenda 2063 is the African Union’s long-term development framework for transforming Africa into a more integrated, prosperous and peaceful continent by 2063. It outlines priorities including economic growth, regional integration, infrastructure development, good governance, industrialisation and greater value creation from Africa’s resources.
Key developments:
- Leaders highlighted the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), industrialisation and reducing trade barriers.
- AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf called for integration efforts to move from commitments into practical implementation.
- President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, Chairperson of the AU, emphasised infrastructure, manufacturing capacity and technology transfer.
- The meeting reaffirmed the role of peace, security and sustainable financing in achieving Africa’s long-term development goals.
The AU stated that stronger cooperation between continental and regional institutions will be essential to building a more connected, prosperous and resilient Africa.
