Eritrea has called on the United Nations Security Council to take “deterrent measures” against Ethiopia, rejecting Addis Ababa’s allegations of an Eritrean incursion into the Tigray region and accusing it of preparing a wider conflict.
Foreign Minister Osman Saleh urged the UN to act under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, while Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos described the reported Eritrean advance as “a blatant act of aggression” and cited Ethiopia’s right to self-defence under Article 51.
- Ethiopia says Eritrean forces entered Tigray and advanced up to 60km.
- Eritrea denies the allegations and says Ethiopia is using them to justify military action.
- Ethiopian forces say they have recaptured Mekelle and carried out drone strikes on Eritrean troops.
The latest diplomatic exchange highlights rapidly worsening relations between the two neighbours, raising concerns that the conflict could further destabilise the Horn of Africa following the 2020–2022 Tigray war.
