Northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region has entered a new period of political uncertainty after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) announced the restoration of pre-war governing structures and named Debretsion Gebremichael as regional president.
The move follows growing tensions between the TPLF and Ethiopia’s federal government over the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement, which ended the 2020–2022 Tigray conflict.
Key developments:
- The TPLF restored the former legislative council that existed before the civil war.
- Interim regional president Tadesse Worede has said he will remain in office, creating rival administrations.
- The European Union and Britain have urged de-escalation amid fears of renewed conflict.
- Armed skirmishes between TPLF forces and federal-aligned fighters have been reported since January 2026.
The Tigray war, involving Ethiopian and Eritrean forces, was among the deadliest conflicts of the century, with hundreds of thousands affected by violence, famine, and healthcare collapse.
