In a statement to Parliament on Monday (12 Oct), UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham highlighted the forthcoming UK-EU summit, saying it offers an opportunity to strengthen economic growth, improve cooperation on illegal immigration and deepen ties with the European Union.

Burnham said discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen included a food and drink trade agreement, emissions trading, closer energy cooperation, a youth experience scheme and migration cooperation. He said the proposed agreements could add the equivalent of more than £10 billion annually to the UK economy by 2040, adding: “Sticking with the status quo is not good enough for Britain.”

Responding for the Opposition, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch argued the government should instead focus on recent security and economic challenges. She cited the alleged Iran-backed plot targeting RAF Fairford, a strategic RAF base used by US forces, following recent government claims linking the incident to Iran, which has denied involvement.

Badenoch also referred to a recent dispute between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and highlighted continued Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia, which have intensified regional security concerns and prompted Riyadh to seek additional support from allies.

She criticised the government’s priorities, saying: “This is just another example of him trying to distract the country rather than solve the immediate challenges he faced.”

The exchange reflects the broader challenge facing the UK government as it seeks to balance economic cooperation with the EU against growing international security pressures. While ministers have emphasised trade, growth and closer partnerships with European allies, the Opposition has argued that defence commitments and economic pressures should remain central to government priorities.
