Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has questioned US President Donald Trump’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he does not understand how the two leaders can have a friendly relationship while Russia’s war against Ukraine continues.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Zelenskyy said: “Putin is an enemy for us and he is a real evil of today,” adding: “How can Trump be friend with him?” He said Ukraine is “fighting for freedom and for our rights to choose” its future.

The comments come amid growing tensions between Zelenskyy and Trump over Washington’s approach to the war. Recent disputes have centred on a US-backed energy ceasefire proposal, Ukraine’s continued strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, a reported US-Russia diesel agreement, and concerns in Kyiv over military support and intelligence cooperation.
