Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling for direct negotiations and a full ceasefire as part of renewed efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
In an open letter published on Thursday (4 June), Zelenskyy argued that peace could only be achieved through direct engagement between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia. He suggested potential venues including Switzerland, Türkiye and countries in the Arab world.
The letter also criticised Russia’s military campaign and urged Moscow to pursue a negotiated settlement rather than a prolonged conflict. Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared for a ceasefire during talks, an all-for-all prisoner exchange, and discussions on future security guarantees.
Key developments:
- Zelenskyy formally proposed a direct meeting with Putin to discuss ending the war.
- Ukraine offered a full ceasefire for the duration of negotiations.
- Kyiv called for prisoner exchanges and the return of civilians and children affected by the conflict.
The proposal comes as peace negotiations remain stalled and fighting continues across Ukraine and Russian-occupied territories.
