The United States and Finland have signed a Critical Minerals Framework and a Technology Prosperity Deal, expanding cooperation on strategic supply chains, emerging technologies and economic security.

Speaking in Washington on Thursday (29 Oct), US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the agreements would strengthen collaboration on critical minerals essential for semiconductors, batteries, defence systems and energy infrastructure, while building on Finland’s expertise in mining, refining and advanced technologies.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said the agreements marked another milestone in bilateral relations, noting that two-way trade in goods and services has increased by more than 60% in recent years and US direct investment in Finland has more than doubled.

According to the Technology Prosperity Deal, the two countries will also deepen cooperation on artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, 5G and 6G communications, semiconductors, civil nuclear energy, biotechnology, space, Arctic technologies, defence innovation and research security, with the aim of strengthening long-term industrial, technological and economic competitiveness.
