French President Emmanuel Macron and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have agreed to deepen France–Japan strategic cooperation during a Tokyo summit, focusing on economic security, nuclear energy, AI, and defence ties.

Both leaders emphasised long-term resilience, signing road maps on rare earth supply chains, next-generation nuclear technology, and space cooperation. Macron reiterated the vision of a “coalition of independents” grounded in multilateralism and rule of law, while Takaichi stressed the importance of partnerships with like-minded nations.

The agreement includes joint projects to reduce reliance on Chinese rare earth exports, alongside expanded military coordination and technology partnerships.

Key developments:

• Joint rare earths initiative, including refining projects in France

• Cooperation on modular reactors, fusion energy, and uranium sourcing

• Expanded space and defence collaboration, including satellite data-sharing

• New AI and semiconductor partnerships, with focus on “trustworthy AI”
