Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi agreed to expand cooperation across defence, economic security, clean energy, artificial intelligence and regional stability during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in New Delhi.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, highlighting closer collaboration to support a resilient Indo-Pacific, strengthen supply chains and promote investment, innovation and people-to-people exchanges.

Key developments:

  • Defence and security: Expanded maritime cooperation, defence technology projects and ministerial dialogue.
  • Economy and technology: New agreements covering economic security, semiconductors, AI, critical minerals and resilient supply chains.
  • Energy and infrastructure: Greater cooperation on clean energy, hydrogen, high-speed rail and strategic petroleum reserves.
  • Regional issues: Support for a rules-based Indo-Pacific, UN Security Council reform, peace in Ukraine and cooperation through the Quad and ASEAN.
