The United States has announced plans to establish a regional drone training centre in Morocco, signalling a shift towards technology-led security cooperation across Africa. The initiative was unveiled at the 13th African Land Forces Summit in Rome.

General Christopher Donahue said the centre will act as a collaborative hub for intelligence sharing and counterterrorism coordination, with the potential to expand across the continent. The programme will be piloted during African Lion 2026, a major multinational military exercise hosted in Morocco.

General Dagvin R.M. Anderson highlighted the broader economic impact, linking security cooperation to long-term stability and investment. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Leonguerrero emphasised efforts to integrate emerging technologies into operational environments.

• African Lion 2026 runs from 20 April to 8 May across multiple Moroccan cities

• 19 African nations and international partners are expected to participate

• Over 40 defence technology companies will test advanced systems

• Drone capabilities remain central to intelligence and counterterrorism operations

African leaders, including Major General Saidu Audu, stressed the growing importance of drone technology, particularly in regions such as the Lake Chad Basin.
