Sudan has entered its fourth year of civil war, as fighting between forces led by Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo continues with no clear resolution.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with widespread displacement, famine risk, and infrastructure collapse across key regions including Darfur.
• At least 59,000 people killed; over 13 million displaced, according to UN estimates
• Around 34 million people require humanitarian assistance, with famine conditions worsening
• Evidence cited by UN-backed experts suggests genocide indicators in Darfur violence
Donors pledged €1.3 billion at a Berlin conference aimed at securing aid and a ceasefire. UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the anniversary as a “tragic milestone,” warning of broader regional destabilisation.
However, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticised the meeting as a “colonial tutelage approach”, criticising Western leaders for not consulting or coordinating with Khartoum. The ministry said the West was trying to impose its agenda and vision.
The ministry said it “will not accept that countries and regional and international organisations convene to decide on its affairs and bypass the Sudanese government under the pretext of neutrality”.
