Vietnam’s President To Lam met with China’s President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday (15 April), marking his first foreign visit since taking office.

The leaders held talks at the Great Hall of the People and signed several cooperation agreements, according to Chinese state media, though details were not disclosed. In official remarks, Mr To Lam described ties with China as a “strategic priority”, calling for deeper integration across supply chains, infrastructure, and development strategies.

Despite rival territorial claims in the South China Sea, both countries signalled intent to expand economic cooperation. China remains Vietnam’s largest supplier, while the United States is its main export market, underscoring Hanoi’s balancing strategy.

The meeting comes amid broader geopolitical pressures, including energy security concerns linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and global economic uncertainty.
