Informal rubbish dumps are expanding across central Gaza, as conflict-related restrictions and infrastructure damage disrupt waste management and sanitation systems.

In Darla, near displacement camps, waste has accumulated close to shelters, exposing residents to pests and increasing health risks. Local officials say access to the Al-Fukhari landfill has been blocked since the start of the war, forcing reliance on temporary dumping sites that have become semi-permanent.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns sanitation conditions are deteriorating, with disease risks rising across overcrowded camps.

  • Around 80% of displacement camps are affected by pests and rodents
  • Waste collection systems are near collapse due to fuel and equipment shortages
  • Blocked landfill access has led to waste accumulation near homes and tents
  • Poor sanitation is increasing risks of diarrhoeal, skin and infectious diseases
  • Officials, including Ahmed Al-Sufi, head of Gaza’s Joint Services Council for Solid Waste Management, warn the crisis now poses a direct threat to public health and the environment.
