South Sudan is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis, with UN officials warning of a growing risk of famine amid escalating conflict and severe food insecurity.

Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, told the UN Security Council that the country is at a “dangerous crossroads”, urging urgent action to prevent a full-scale collapse.

He warned that hunger is intensifying nationwide, with emergency levels of food insecurity expected across all 10 states during the current lean season.

  • Over 7.5 million people are projected to require food assistance in 2026
  • More than 140,000 people in Jonglei State face acute humanitarian need
  • Over 280,000 civilians have been displaced by renewed fighting
  • Flooding is expected to worsen access and disrupt livelihoods

Anita Kiki Gbeho, head of UNMISS, highlighted escalating violence between rival forces, noting civilians continue to bear the brunt.

UN officials have called for increased humanitarian access, funding, and adherence to international humanitarian law.
