The United Nations has warned that the conflict in Sudan is entering a more dangerous phase as El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, faces sustained drone attacks amid advancing fighting between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
Addressing the Human Rights Council, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk urged world leaders to act urgently, citing growing civilian casualties, displacement and damage to critical infrastructure.
Key developments:
- 15 drone strikes were documented around El Obeid in three weeks, killing at least 45 civilians.
- More than 13 million people have been displaced since the conflict began in 2023.
- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports displacement across Kordofan has increased by nearly two-thirds in the past three months.
The UN has also called for greater humanitarian access, accountability for alleged atrocities, and stronger international efforts to protect civilians.
