The United Nations-backed gang suppression force (GSF) in Haiti has secured pledges exceeding its 5,500 target, with Chadian troops already deployed in Port-au-Prince, according to UN Special Envoy Carlos Ruiz Massieu.

Briefing the UN Security Council, Ruiz Massieu said full deployment is expected by late 2026. The force, authorised in September 2025, replaces a smaller Kenya-led mission and has expanded powers, including arrests.

  • Over $200 million pledged by 13 council members; $59 million disbursed
  • 2,400+ deaths reported between December–February, a 23% increase
  • 1.45 million displaced, over half children

Jacques Christofides, the mission’s special representative, said operational frameworks are now in place. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé reaffirmed plans to restore state authority and expand security forces.

Gang violence, which intensified after the 2021 assassination of Jovenel Moïse, continues to drive instability, though officials report limited territorial gains by police.
