US President Donald Trump said he is not rushing negotiations with Iran, citing internal instability in Tehran and ongoing military pressure.

Speaking after participating in a healthcare affordability event in the Oval Office on Thursday (23 April), he claimed the US had struck roughly 75% of its targets, imposed a “100% effective” blockade, and significantly weakened Iran’s military capacity, while indicating talks are continuing despite uncertainty over Iranian leadership.

Trump added that Washington is seeking a deal to prevent nuclear escalation but ruled out the use of nuclear weapons, describing them as unnecessary given current conventional operations. He suggested a resolution could come “fairly soon”, though no timeline has been set.

In the midst of an extended ceasefire, the US–Iran war remains centred on the Strait of Hormuz, where ceasefire negotiations are unresolved and maritime security risks persist.

US Central Command reports a large-scale blockade involving around 10,000 personnel, 17 warships and over 100 aircraft, with dozens of vessels turned back.

Recent incidents have heightened tensions, including reported attacks on commercial shipping near Oman and the seizure of vessels. Iran has signalled willingness for dialogue, though President Masoud Pezeshkian cited blockades and perceived breaches of commitments as obstacles.
