Maritime security agencies are warning of a renewed surge in piracy off Somalia’s coast, following multiple vessel seizures in April after a prolonged period of relative stability.

According to Ambrey, a St Kitts and Nevis-flagged cargo ship, Sward, was boarded by a suspected pirate group south of Eyl. The vessel, linked to a Marshall Islands owner, was travelling from Suez to Mombasa. Separately, UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the oil tanker Honour 25 was intercepted by unauthorised persons near Somali waters.

The incidents come amid wider disruption to global shipping routes, with vessels increasingly rerouted away from the Suez Canal.

  • At least four vessels seized in one week, signalling increased pirate activity
  • EU Naval Force Operation Atalanta investigating two confirmed incidents
  • Recent attack follows a March piracy incident involving an Iranian-flagged dhow
  • Authorities assessing whether activity reflects organised piracy or local disputes

Naval authorities continue to advise heightened caution in the region.
