Malta will hold a parliamentary election on May 30, 2026, after Prime Minister Robert Abela announced an early vote, one year ahead of schedule.

In a televised address, Abela said the coming months would be “crucial” given global conditions, arguing that political stability is essential. He stated the government is financially prepared and pledged continued stability in energy prices.

The ruling Labour Party currently holds a strong parliamentary majority and is projected by opinion polls to secure a fourth consecutive term.

  • Malta’s economy remains one of Europe’s strongest performers, with 2.2% deficit and 46% debt-to-GDP
  • Low inflation and near-zero unemployment have increased reliance on foreign workers
  • External risks include Middle East tensions, potentially affecting inflation and tourism

Alex Borg, leader of the Nationalist Party, will contest the election. Malta’s parliament has been dominated by these two parties since 1966.
