Azerbaijan’s National Assembly has approved a resolution suspending cooperation with the European Parliament in all areas, citing what it described as continued “anti-Azerbaijani policy, slander, and smear activities.”
According to Azerbaijan’s state agency Azertac, lawmakers argued that parliamentary platforms including the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee and the EuroNest Parliamentary Assembly had become instruments of pressure against Baku.
Key developments include:
- Azerbaijan’s parliament formally suspended engagement with the European Parliament.
- Baku summoned the EU ambassador and lodged an official protest.
- Azerbaijan rejected EU criticism regarding Karabakh, detainees, and cultural heritage concerns.
- The dispute follows a European Parliament resolution supporting the return of Armenian residents to Karabakh.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry stated that recent European Parliament claims regarding Armenian detainees and cultural heritage were “unfounded” and constituted interference in the country’s internal affairs.
The ministry also called on the EU to avoid actions that could damage regional peace and normalisation efforts in the South Caucasus.
