Solomon Islands lawmakers have elected Matthew Wale as the country’s new prime minister following the removal of former leader Jeremiah Manele in a parliamentary no-confidence vote.
The leader of the Solomon Islands Democratic Party secured 26 votes against 22 for the government-backed candidate. Wale said his administration would pursue “necessary” reforms while addressing economic and social challenges facing the Pacific nation.
Despite a population of just 700,000, the Solomon Islands occupies a strategic position 1,600 kilometres (990 miles) northeast of Australia.
- Matthew Wale has previously called for greater transparency in foreign agreements and business dealings.
- The Solomon Islands switched diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China in 2019.
- Analysts say the leadership change may affect regional geopolitics in the Pacific.
- Rising fuel prices and pressure on health and education services remain major domestic concerns.
Observers said Wale is expected to balance relations with both China and Australia while focusing on governance, infrastructure and public services.
