The Houthis and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government have agreed to exchange 1,750 detainees in the largest prisoner swap since the Yemen conflict escalated in 2015. The agreement includes the release of seven Saudi nationals held by the Iran-aligned group.
The deal comes as Saudi Arabia increases diplomatic efforts to revive the stalled UN-led Yemen peace process and prevent further regional escalation linked to the Iran conflict.
Key developments include:
- Release of 1,750 detainees between both sides
- Inclusion of seven Saudi prisoners held by the Houthis
- Continued adherence to the fragile 2022 truce
- Ongoing Saudi mediation and regional de-escalation efforts
Analysts said the agreement could strengthen confidence-building measures between the parties while reducing risks to Red Sea shipping routes and Saudi energy infrastructure.
The Houthis have not launched attacks on Saudi Arabia since the 2022 ceasefire took effect, despite heightened regional tensions.
