US President Donald Trump has said American and Nigerian forces carried out a joint military operation in Africa that killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, whom he described as the “second in command of ISIS globally”.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the operation was conducted “at my direction” and described it as a “meticulously planned and very complex mission”. He added that al-Minuki had been targeted with intelligence support and said his death would weaken Islamic State operations.

The Nigerian military has not yet publicly confirmed the operation or provided details on the reported raid.

Key developments:

  • Trump described al-Minuki as the “most active terrorist in the world”
  • Al-Minuki was designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by Washington in 2023
  • The operation highlights growing US–Nigeria counterterrorism cooperation
  • IS-linked groups remain active across Nigeria, the Lake Chad Basin, and the Sahel region
