Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has approved Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to enter the candidate selection process for the forthcoming Makerfield by-election, opening a potential path back to Parliament.

The move comes amid mounting pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer following Labour’s losses in recent local elections and growing internal criticism over the government’s direction and leadership.

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting publicly backed Burnham’s return to Westminster, while several Labour figures and trade unions have voiced support for his possible future leadership ambitions.

Burnham has said he wants to “change Labour for the better” but has not confirmed plans to challenge Starmer for the party leadership.
