Belarus’ Defence Ministry has announced the start of joint military exercises with Russia focused on the combat use of nuclear weapons and nuclear support operations.

According to the ministry, the drills are intended to improve the readiness of Belarusian forces to operate “modern weapons” and test deployment capabilities from unprepared locations across the country.

The Belarusian authorities stated the exercises are part of planned activities within the Union State alliance with Russia and are “not directed against third countries”.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticised the drills, warning they could undermine global nuclear non-proliferation efforts and calling for additional sanctions against Moscow and Minsk.
