US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said NATO Allies are continuing discussions on defence coordination, global force posture and maritime security following meetings in Helsingborg, Sweden.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio said the United States is “constantly reevaluating where we’re positioning forces” due to commitments across Europe, the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East. He added that future adjustments to the US troop presence in Europe “shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody”.
Addressing concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, Rubio said allied nations must prepare a “plan B” if Iran refuses to reopen strategic shipping lanes. “Someone is going to have to do something about it,” he said, while noting no formal NATO mission or concrete commitments were announced.
Rubio also described Sweden as “an incredible addition to NATO” and confirmed new US-Sweden cooperation agreements covering biotechnology, AI and advanced technology.
Closing his remarks, Rubio reiterated support for negotiated solutions in both Ukraine and Iran, while warning that unresolved tensions could risk wider regional instability and broader conflict.
