NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said alliance members remain committed to collective defence and increased military readiness following a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in Helsingborg, Sweden, on Friday (22 May).

Speaking after the talks, Rutte said NATO allies were preparing for the upcoming summit in Ankara by focusing on defence investment, industrial production, and continued support for Ukraine.

Rutte stressed the importance of maintaining unity across the alliance, stating: “Allies’ commitment to Article Five is ironclad.” He added that NATO’s “resolve and ability to defend every Ally is absolute” and described the alliance as defensive in nature.

The Secretary General also called for faster defence production across Europe and North America, saying NATO industries must produce military capabilities “faster and at greater scale on both sides of the Atlantic.”

On Ukraine, Rutte said allies remained committed to providing “substantial, predictable, and sustainable” support as Russia’s war continues. He also addressed wider security concerns, including tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the impact on global commerce.

Concluding his address, Rutte said NATO allies were adapting to what he described as a more dangerous global environment through increased deterrence, defence cooperation, burden sharing, and long-term support for Ukraine. He said the alliance’s objective remained “a stronger NATO and greater security for all of us.”
