Pakistan and China signed two cooperation agreements in Zhejiang Province on Saturday  (23 May) as Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif began a four-day visit to China focused on economic, technological and regional cooperation.

The agreements were signed during Sharif’s meeting with Wang Hao, Communist Party chief of Zhejiang, in Hangzhou. They include a sister-province partnership between Punjab and Zhejiang, alongside plans for a China-Pakistan Joint Technology Research Center at Hangzhou Normal University.

“The Prime Minister said Pakistan attached high importance to strengthening cooperation with Zhejiang Province, particularly in the fields of digital economy, e-commerce, information technology, telecommunications, agriculture, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and skills development,” said a statement released by Sharif’s office.

Key developments include:

  • Expansion of Pakistan-China cooperation in technology, trade and digital connectivity
  • Increased focus on the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)
  • Collaboration in renewable energy, agriculture, telecommunications and advanced manufacturing
  • Discussions expected on regional security and the ongoing US-Iran conflict

Sharif is also expected to meet President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang in Beijing during the visit.
