Speaking during a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday (27 May), US President Donald Trump said Iran “want very much to make a deal” as negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue, while warning the US could “finish the job” if talks fail.

Trump said the administration was “not satisfied” with current proposals but described ongoing discussions as positive. He claimed Iran was “negotiating on fumes” and said the country’s economy was “in free fall”.

Trump also called for Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and other regional states to join the Abraham Accords, describing the move as “historic” if completed. He added: “I’m not sure we should make the deal if they don’t sign.”

The Abraham Accords are a series of US-brokered normalisation agreements between Israel and several Arab states, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan, first signed in 2020 during Trump’s first presidency.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said the administration was “definitely pushing” for further regional normalisation agreements, as the White House continues diplomatic efforts alongside wider Middle East negotiations.
