Equatorial Guinea’s government has resigned after Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue announced it had failed to meet key performance objectives, paving the way for the appointment of a new administration.
According to the vice-president, Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua submitted the resignation of the entire government after it reportedly achieved only around 10% of its targets.
Key developments:
- President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo criticised the outgoing government over alleged corruption and poor implementation of development projects.
- Officials also cited a failure to diversify the economy, particularly through agriculture, leaving the country heavily dependent on oil and gas.
- A new government is expected to be appointed following the mass resignation.
Equatorial Guinea, one of Africa’s largest oil producers, has faced economic challenges in recent years as declining oil production and demand have affected growth, while poverty remains widespread despite the country’s natural resource wealth.
