US President Donald Trump has commented on the resignation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, saying the former Labour leader had damaged his political standing through his approach to energy, immigration, and NATO.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office after signing an executive order on quantum computing, Trump described Starmer as “a lovely man” and “sort of a friend of mine”, but said he had repeatedly disagreed with the UK government’s energy policy.
Trump argued that the UK was “really messing up energy”, claiming the country should expand North Sea oil and gas production instead of importing energy from Norway. He added that the UK has “a much better portion of the North Sea” but had chosen not to develop it for environmental reasons.
Referring to Starmer’s political challenges, Trump said “he’s got two problems. Energy and immigration”, before adding, “he’s really hurt himself very, very badly.” He also criticised an earlier disagreement over the use of Diego Garcia for US military operations, saying the episode had been “a bad move”.
