South Korea and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and agreed to revive joint humanitarian search-and-rescue exercises as the two countries continue strengthening defence cooperation.
During talks in Seoul, South Korean Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back and Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi agreed to enhance bilateral security cooperation and work alongside the United States to support regional peace and stability.
Key developments:
- Joint search-and-rescue drills will resume following agreements reached in 2026.
- Defence cooperation will continue to address North Korea’s nuclear programme and regional security challenges.
- Military exchanges between South Korea’s Black Eagles and Japan’s Blue Impulse aerobatic teams will also expand.
The discussions build on recent agreements between President Lee Jae Myung and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, although historical and territorial disputes between the neighbours remain unresolved.
