Poland and Sweden have launched the Baltic Sea Pact, a new framework to strengthen security, defence and industrial cooperation following their first intergovernmental consultations in Gdynia on Monday (29 Jun).
The agreement aims to enhance regional stability through closer political coordination, military cooperation and defence-industrial integration. Both countries, as NATO Allies and European Union member states, said the pact reflects their shared assessment of Europe’s security environment and continued support for Ukraine.
Key developments:
- Political collaboration through regular high-level security consultations.
- Military cooperation including joint planning, training, exercises and intelligence sharing.
- Defence-industrial cooperation covering technology, innovation, supply chains and joint capability development.
The pact also identifies Russia as the principal long-term security challenge facing the Baltic Sea region and outlines plans to strengthen regional deterrence and preparedness.
The announcement coincided with Poland signing an agreement to procure three Saab A26 submarines from Sweden under its Orka naval modernisation programme.
The deal, which includes weapons, training and support, is intended to strengthen Poland’s underwater capabilities in the Baltic Sea while reinforcing long-term Polish-Swedish defence cooperation alongside the new Baltic Sea Pact. Final deliveries are expected by 2038.
