Keiko Fujimori has been officially declared the winner of Peru’s 2026 presidential election, following weeks of ballot reviews and disputes after one of the country’s closest presidential races.
According to Peru’s electoral office, the president-elect secured 50.135% of the vote, defeating Roberto Sanchez, who received 49.865%.
Key developments:
- Fujimori won by around 50,000 votes from more than 18 million ballots cast.
- Roberto Sanchez has rejected the result, alleging electoral fraud without presenting evidence.
- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Fujimori, highlighting future cooperation on security, trade and investment.
- Moody’s said policy continuity under a Fujimori administration could strengthen investor confidence and support delayed mining projects.
Fujimori is due to take office on 28 July, succeeding interim President Jose Balcazar, as Peru continues to face political divisions and institutional instability.
