Singapore Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong concluded an official visit to Timor-Leste, where he met President Dr José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão to strengthen bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

President Ramos-Horta awarded Prime Minister Wong the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar) in recognition of his contributions to the partnership, including Singapore’s support for Timor-Leste’s ASEAN membership.

Key developments:

  • Singapore and Timor-Leste signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing bilateral consultations.
  • The leaders agreed to expand cooperation in trade, investment, development assistance and people-to-people exchanges.
  • Singapore announced additional ASEAN capacity-building programmes for Timor-Leste.
  • From the second half of 2027, Timor-Leste will become an approved Non-Traditional Source country for Work Permit holders in selected sectors, supporting closer economic cooperation.
